PSV Eindhoven midfielder Joey Veerman will still be looking for Arsenal’s Martin Ødegaard in his sleep after being dominated by him in their clash this week.
That’s according to journalist Marco Timmer who, alongside Henk Spaan, having been praising the Arsenal star, albeit via criticism of Veerman.
Arsenal were comfortable winners over PSV in the Champions League group stages earlier this week, with a confident 4-0 win that could and probably should have been greater.
Ødegaard was again the star man for the Gunners, with an imperious display in midfield that saw him bag a goal but dominate throughout.
His excellent performance came at the expense of Veerman, who had been tasked with keeping the Norwegian under wraps but completely failed to do so.
That is something that will be haunting him, according to Timme and Spaan, who criticise Veerman’s efforts today.
“I can waste a lot of words on it, but this was just a huge difference in quality,” Timmer is reported saying by PSV Fans.
“This Arsenal is simply far too strong for PSV. The score might have been lower, and PSV might have scored, but that is apart from the qualities of Martin Ødegaard, Mikel Arteta and Gabriel Jesus.”
“I think Joey Veerman had a very bad night. Maybe he was still looking for Ødegaard in his sleep. Because he kept walking away from him. When Veerman came to him, he walked away from his back.
“If Veerman wanted to help in defense, Ødegaard moved in the other direction again, because he felt a change of side coming.”
“Veerman suffered a terrible loss,” added Spaan.
“He simply couldn’t match the speed at which Arsenal moved the game, nor did he have the lung capacity for it. Defending back was a jog where sprinting was required again and again. Good football player in the Eredivisie.”
