Nélson Semedo’s contract at Wolverhampton Wanderers expires in June and he’s been linked with a move to Benfica, a move only possible if he lowers his wage expectations.

Over the past few weeks, Record stated the Eagles are optimistic of signing the right-back on a free transfer.

On March 19th, A Bola reported the Wolves player has to take a pay cut in order to return to his former club in the summer window. A day later, Correio da Manhã said Semedo earns €4.2m net per year at Molineux while Benfica can’t offer more than €2m annually.

The Portugal international spent five years at Benfica between 2012 and 2017 and a move back to the Estádio da Luz will see him reunite with former Wolves manager Bruno Lage.

On Sunday, the fullback featured in Portugal’s UEFA Nations League win over Denmark. After the tie, the 31-year-old spoke to reporters in the mixed zone and Maisfutebol have relayed his comments.

When specifically asked about the Benfica links, he said: “For now we’re with the national team. We’ve just finished the national team and it’s too early to think about that. I still have a lot of time to think about it.”

Semedo has been the first-choice right-back at Wolves and made 29 appearances this season. Vítor Pereira and his side need to act quick if they want to avoid losing him for free in the summer window.
