Diogo Jota’s quick success at Liverpool isn’t only making some noise in English football. People in his home country have been pretty excited about it as well.
Following a £40m move from Wolverhampton Wanderers this summer, the winger already has seven goals in ten matches for the Reds so far.
That’s a reason for him to be mentioned in press conferences which have nothing to do with him. That was the case today, as Benfica manager Jorge Jesus talked to the local press regarding the upcoming Europa League clash against Glasgow Rangers.
Jesus was asked about Jota, and gave him a lot of credit due to his past at Portuguese sides Gondomar and Paços de Ferreira.
“Jota started from nothing, didn’t start with the big ones and sometimes those who start in the big ones have the advantage of getting to the top faster, but that doesn’t mean they go further,” said Jorge Jesus (via O Jogo).
“Jota started in teams with less value until he got there where he arrived, last year he was a surprise in the English league and now he reached the top of the England teams, the best team in the world. I was one of their victims, I lost the Club World Cup.”
“To be a player with a very bid expression at Liverpool, you have to be very valuable, because when you get there you have Salah, Firmino and Mané… This is good for Portuguese football, for the national team, for Fernando Santos, we are at the level of the best in the world. Outside of Europe, there are only Argentina and Brazil to compete. It’s a great satisfaction.”
This morning, Portuguese newspaper Record was also full of praise for the new Liverpool star. They called him a ‘surprise reinforcement’ for the Reds, claiming he should now have the chance to show his full potential since it’s the first time he joins a squad of such quality.
