Georgios Samaras left Celtic Park with four Scottish Premier League titles, 2 Scottish Cups, and a Scottish League Cup. It’s safe to say the Greek striker made an impact during his time with the club.
Whilst current star Moussa Dembele may be more talented, and is certainly a much loved part of Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic squad, the Frenchman will have to go some way to be remembered with as much affection as Samaras.
A genuinely nice guy, Samaras did all he could to ‘get’ Celtic and it worked, there’s a special place in the hearts of many of the club’s fans for the player.
Now 32 years of age and playing for Real Zaragoza in Spain’s second tier, Samaras has been speaking to Marca. It would have been wrong for them to conduct an interview without mentioning Celtic, and the Spanish newspaper didn’t disapoint.
Put to Samaras that Celtic is ‘the club of his life’, Marca then asked what he’d need to be as happy again as he was those years in Glasgow: “Nothing can compare. I was at Celtic seven years and had good and bad times. To be happy I need time. Lately, I’ve been at clubs too little time. Six months or a year. In addition, I’ve had injuries.
“What I like is to know the club and be involved. Hopefully in Zaragoza it could be as long as at Celtic.”
Probably not Georgios, given you’re 32. But the sentiment, as ever, is right from the Celtic hero.
