Hugo Lloris’ injury setback last season allowed Paulo Gazzaniga to make 18 league appearances for Tottenham Hotspur.

Joe Hart’s summer arrival saw Gazzaniga drop down the pecking order at Spurs, which is why he tried to look for a way out.

According to Alicante Plaza, the goalkeeper ‘showed interest’ in leaving José Mourinho’s side last summer in order to enjoy regular minutes.

However, the 29-year-old had to wait until the winter market, to complete a loan move to Elche CF.

The former Southampton man was presented to the media on Tuesday, and his comments have been relayed by the website. The Spurs owned keeper revealed the conversation he had with Elche convinced him to join them on a temporary deal until the end of the season.

“I accepted Elche because I saw that it is a growing club. Before coming I was informed about the club and they spoke to me very well. Also about the unity of the group despite being in a difficult moment and that is something that must be highlighted,” Gazzaniga said.

Having won only three of their 20 league matches, Elche are 19th in the table with 18 points, two points behind Eibar, who are in the 17th spot.

Gazzaniga’s current deal at Tottenham is until 2022. Therefore, the north London club are likely to sell him in the summer, in order to avoid letting the player run down his contract.
