Newcastle United have been urged to spend their newfound wealth wisely, as opposed to just buying whomever they can.
The Magpies were finally bought by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund last week, bringing an end to Mike Ashley’s disastrous ownership of the club.
The takeover has officially made Newcastle the richest club in the world as PIF’s wealth far exceeding that of the likes of PSG and Manchester City.
Naturally, big things are expected in the North East in the near future, with their fans hoping to see the same kind of turnaround witnessed at the Etihad but on a greater scale.
They’ve already seen their club linked to a plethora of big-name signings as their new owners are reportedly happy to splash the cash and relatively unrestricted by Financial Fair Play.
Whether they can secure some of the names being mentioned remains to be seen, but they’ve been urged to avoid that by former Netherlands international Willem van Hanegem.
“It used to be easy to end up at Newcastle United, but those days are over,” he wrote in his column for Algemeen Dagblad.
“That club has been taken over by the crown prince of Saudi Arabia and is suddenly very rich. Newcastle is a kind of Feyenoord with all those people who are orphaned by their club.
“I hope they don’t start buying everything now, but build it up slowly.
“Spend the money wisely; try to find the new David Ginola there. Get young players with a lot of potential. Spain has quite a few of them around. The Netherlands too, I think.”
