In December we covered claims from the Catalan media that Everton are one of a number of clubs interested in signing Marc Cucurella from Barcelona. The 18 year old left back has been playing for Barcelona’s Juvenil A side and attracting a lot of attention.
Interest from Everton and others is particularly worrying for Barcelona because Cucurella, known simply as Cucu, sees his contract end in the summer. That would mean Barcelona could see the player leave without transfer fee, although they would expect some training compensation.
Tuesday’s edition of Catalan newspaper Sport reports that Cucu is in the process of being promoted to the club’s B squad, a carrot to be dangled for the future. Barcelona B are in Segunda Division B, the third tier of Spanish league football.
There’s no mention of progress on a new contract, so if Everton are really interested they have a reasonable chance of persuading the player.
Cucu turns 19 in July, if Koeman rates him highly enough to offer a place in Everton’s senior squad then that’s possibly more tempting, and obviously more financially beneficial, than playing for Barca B in the third tier.
