Ander Herrera was one of the Manchester United players involved in launching the club’s new watch collection on Wednesday, and at the event he spoke to Spanish newspaper AS about his current situation.
Herrera is enjoying more prominence under Jose Mourinho and wants to cotninue his improvement, and the enjoyment of playing for Manchester United in the Premier League.
Asked if he feels like he’s one of Mourinho’s most essential players, Herrera replied: “It’s not my job to say if I’m key. I just try to give the best of me, I’m a team player. I am the one that has played fourth most, but if one day I’m going to the bench I’ll help from there. We represent the best team in England and we cannot be selfish.”
There have been suggestions that Herrera, whose current contract runs until June 2018, will be offered a renewal soon, and the Spaniard is certainly ready to listen: “If they want to talk to me, I’ll be happy to sit down, but now there is nothing.”
Herrera’s development has led to international recoginition, and last year saw the funny story of the midfielder getting a late call-up to the Spain squad, and arriving without any boots.
Taking a break in Madrid, Herrera got a call from David De Gea to tell he’d been called up: “Yes, I was in Madrid. Saul was injured, I was with my girlfriend and my son spending a few days and David called me to tell me. I had no boots, so a friend bought me some. It was funny. I will never forget.”
