We’re only three days into the transfer window, but already it appears like several names will dominate the month, and Thomas Lemar is one of them.
The Frenchman is out of favour at Atlético Madrid, and they would happily sell him to fund their hunt for a new striker this month.
Arsenal and Tottenham have both been named as suitors, with both sides seemingly keen on adding some creativity to their midfield.
AS back up those claims today and say that both clubs are keen on Lemar, with the Premier League his ‘most likely destination’ at this point.
However, in this two-horse race, it appears that Arsenal have it easier.
According to the newspaper, their case is ‘simpler’ as they have the money to match Atleti’s asking price, with the club trying to recoup the majority of the €70m they paid for him.
Tottenham, meanwhile, do not have the funds available to do a straight deal and are instead looking for a loan deal with an option to make it permanent in the summer.
That, then, would presumably put Arsenal slightly ahead of Tottenham in the race given, as AS explain, that Atleti would use the money from Lemar’s departure to fund a move for either Edinson Cavani or Paco Alcácer.
It’s likely to rest on the player’s choice unless Atleti are insistent on getting the cash upfront and thus scupper Spurs’ hopes of a loan deal.
