Rafa Benitez’s performance at Everton so far is a result of the bad management at the club above him.

That’s according to journalist Nacho Gonzalez, who believes the Spanish boss has suffered as a result of the chaos that currently engulfs the club at board level.

Benitez arrived at Everton in controversial circumstances in the summer after Carlo Ancelotti elected to leave the club and return to Real Madrid.

The Spaniard was not welcomed warmly at Goodison Park given his association to fierce rivals Liverpool and comments in the past belittling the Toffees.

A strong start to the season helped to dispel some doubts but that soon fell away, with injuries to key players playing a significant role.

A 2-1 win over Arsenal last was Everton’s first since September, a poor run of form that had seen them slide down the table and the pressure firmly rise up against Benitez.

He, though, has received the backing of owner Farhad Moshiri and this week’s departure of Director of Football Marcel Brands was seen as a further demonstration of faith in the manager.

Benitez will now have to justify that with performances on the pitch but Gonzalez believes he has just been a victim of the failings of others.

“It looks bad,” Marca report him saying.

“But I think he’s being the victim of some pretty bad management at a club with a lot of potential.

“He’s come in at a pretty turbulent period.”
