Spanish newspaper Marca on Monday make a bigger deal of ‘Mario Gaspar to Manchester City’ rumours than they really needed to.
With a complete lack of self awareness, or perhaps with tongue firmly placed in cheek, Marca say: ‘In the last hours, the British press has already opened season on the rumour mill by placing Mario Gaspar on the agenda of the City of Guardiola.’
There’s not really been English rumours, nothing major anyway, but Marca still make the move to dismiss the idea, stating: ‘So far, nothing but a rumour.’
Marca paraphrase Villarreal chairman Fernando Roig as saying: ‘I do not care that clubs look out for our players. What would worry me would be precisely the opposite.’
There’s nothing in this, even Marca can’t be bothered stoking the fire. However, it’s not a scenario to dismiss should Manchester City want a right back.
Gaspar is 25 years of age, his contract runs until June 2019. If Pep Guardiola is interested, then he should be able to buy the player, and Manchester City would pay the money required.
With a buyout clause of €20m, it would really be quite easy. It’s surprising Gaspar hasn’t been linked more with the Premier League at that price, maybe his rumour mill time will now come.
