Real Madrid are set to make a move to trump Tottenham to the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino after Zinedine Zidane’s departure from the Bernabeu.
That’s according to Goal Spain, who say Madrid have already ‘knocked on the door’ for the Argentine boss, who is currently in charge at PSG.
They explain that Pochettino is the ‘the most popular option’ at the Bernabeu as he is a coach that Florentino Pérez has ‘always liked’.
Pochettino would ‘welcome’ an offer from the club as it would ‘fulfil his dream’ of managing the club he considers to be the best in the history of football.
The big stumbling block is PSG and the year he has left on his contract there.
His future is in the hands of the club, and talks are planned between the former Tottenham boss and the Argentine.
He knows that this is a ‘golden opportunity’ that he cannot let slip through his fingers, having missed out on the job in the past.
There have already been ‘several informal contacts’ between Madrid and Pochettino already, and they have ‘always left the door open’ for him.
They are set to resume those contacts as long as he managed to ‘get rid’ of PSG and make himself a free agent.
At that point, Madrid will open negotiations, but he has already been sounded out about the move regardless.
All of this will, of course, come as frustrating news to Tottenham, whose hopes of bringing Pochettino back to the club are now a bit more distant.
