Atletico Madrid legend Gabi has spoken to the Spanish press regarding his old club’s 1-0 win over Liverpool in the Champions League this week.
The midfielder has been interviewed by Cadena SER’s El Larguero, and has claimed the Reds have underrated the Colchoneros’ potential.
“A great result. Not to concede goals at home and knock out Liverpool is something unthinkable. It bothers me that Atlético are ignored because it seems that Liverpool was going to play, with all due respect, against Puertabonita,” Gabi told SER (via AS).
Regarding the quotes from Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo, who called the Anfield Road stadium ‘old’, saying ‘it wouldn’t pass a technical inspection’, Gabi has claimed it’s all mind games from him.
“He’s putting pressure on. He’s used to the Metropolitano.”
Gabi has also spoken about Diego Simeone’s celebration, claiming the manager has all the right to do what he did.
“It is a reason to celebrate and they don’t mess with anyone. It’s a time of great pressure and why won’t they celebrate it. From tomorrow there will be little more.”
And regarding the reaction the celebration prompted, the midfielder said it shouldn’t be taken so seriously.
“They have beaten Liverpool after no one gave a chance for them. It’s no big deal.”
With over 400 appearances for Atletico Madrid, Gabi has played two Champions League finals for the club in 2014 and 2016, but lost both of them to city rivals Real Madrid.
Liverpool and Atletico now play the second leg at Anfield on the 11th of March.
