Southampton’s Premier League opener against Burnley may wasn’t the most exciting start to the club’s campaign, although both goalkeepers made good saves, but it may well have been extra frustrating for Jan Bednarek.
At the end of last season, Bednarek was experiencing a breakthrough.
A Premier League debut, including a goal, against Chelsea, and subsequent appearances, got the Polish media very excited.
The defender had ‘accelerated like a Ferrari’ as Southampton’s season came to an end and he helped them avoid relegation to the Championship. Fans were excited, and Bednarek went off to the World Cup, where he made three appearances for his country.
So it will have been felt that this was the season to kick on, but Bednarek spent all 90 minutes on the bench against Burnley.
Germany’s Kicker point this out, and that the arrival of Jannik Vestergaard is only going to make things more difficult.
Hannover 96 are interested, and would hope they could take advantage of the situation, but Bednarek was on the bench, it’s not as though he was out of the match-day squad completely.
Mark Hughes probably feels he needs to keep the 22 year old around the place.
