Duverne

When you’re a 19-year-old defender, being compared to Raphaël Varane is certainly a sign you’re on the right track.

This is what is currently happening to Jean-Kevin Duverne, a young centre-back contracted to RC Lens in France, the same club the now Real Madrid player emerged at five years ago.

Signing his first professional contract this week, the youngster is the subject of a lengthy profile in France Football, where they reveal some of the interest that caused the French club to tie him down.

The player decided to stay in France, to not burn any steps in his career, despite interest from the likes of Tottenham, Newcastle, Sunderland, Southampton and Liverpool, as well as some big Spanish sides.

This all comes after the player broke into the first team this season for the Ligue 2 club, playing a part in five of their first six league games so far.

This isn’t the first time Tottenham and Southampton have been linked with the same player, with the Pochettino links constantly playing a part in the scouting of both sides, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if the manager’s scouts have had an eye on the youngster for some time now at both his current and former club.

With this being a transfer for the future, we’ll be keeping an eye out for any more stories over the coming months, and on his development, because if he turns out to really be the “next Varane”, more and more clubs will be lining up to get the next RC Lens prodigy.
