As reported by Portuguese newspaper A Bola today, Southampton sent scouts to watch the league game between Moreirense and Braga on Saturday.
It’s not hard to guess this is an unusual transfer mission, and it becomes even more so by knowing that clubs like Manchester United, who have scouts at a big percentage of Portuguese league games, didn’t even have officials at this match.
Southampton were the only English side on the list, along with Marseille, Roulouse, Montpellier, SPAL, Atalanta, Anderlecht, Mol Vidi, Tenerife and Deportivo La Coruña.
Moreirense, who are in fifth place, beat Braga, who are in fourth, with a 1-0 scoreline. The result has put the home side just three points behind a Europa League spot.
The man of the match was Moreirense defender Ivanildo, who besides having a safe game, also scored the winner after a mistake from Braga goalkeeper Thiago Sá.
Southampton haven’t been linked to any Moreirense or Braga players lately, so it’s hard to say if they had a specific target in this game. The Saints often have scouts in Portugal, so maybe they will come up with a couple of names at the end of the season.
