Making his first appearance for Paris Saint-Germain towards the end of the season in a one minute cameo against Montpellier in a 4-0 win, Djeidi Gassama received a confidence boost from Mauricio Pochettino.
The 18-year-old had clearly impressed the Argentine enough to earn himself a spot on the bench in the first place, and there are many clubs, including Southampton, keeping an eye on his progress.
What’s also clear is that his future could lie elsewhere, which will be of interest to the Saints, as Foot Mercato reveal on Wednesday that the winger is waiting to see who the next manager is before deciding whether he wants to stick around.
It’s pointed out that with one year left on his deal, the forward, capable of playing across the front three, is ‘thinking about what comes next in his career’, with many clubs interested in his services.
Sporting Clube de Portugal are at the front of the queue, but Basel, Club Brugge, Southampton and Borussia Mönchengladbach are all also ‘strongly pushing’ as well.
Still, despite Ralph Hasenhüttl and co. being after him, the player ‘isn’t in a rush’, because if he gets the chance of making a space for himself in Paris, that’s what he’ll try and do.
And with Pochettino’s replacement expected to be announced sooner rather than later, Southampton might have a better idea of their chances going forward, because if whoever takes over isn’t fond of giving youth a chance, that will be their time to stick their foot in the door.
