Denmark’s Tipsbladet today features an interview with Southampton defender Jannik Vestergaard, who’s been dreaming of a summer with the national team.

Despite being called up for the 2018 World Cup, he was Denmark’s only outfield player not to have a single minute in the tournament. Now he hasn’t been called up in over a year, and one of the reasons is his ups and downs at Southampton, where he hasn’t had a big sequence in the starting team.

But with a few new chances for the Premier League side lately, he expects he can be in Denmark’s squad to play during the Euros in his home town, since Copenhagen is one of the hosts for this year’s edition.

“A Euros at home is every boy’s dream – mine too. I’ve been there before and will naturally try to get into consideration with as many good performances in the Premier League as possible,” Vestergaard told Tipsbladet.

“The national team has always been a part of my football life, ever since the super good time as a U21 player, when I was proud to be a leader for my country.”

“I think I have delivered steadily when given the chance in the Premier League lately, and especially in the win over Crystal Palace, I think I played a really good match. I feel in good shape right now and I’m really up because I’m glad to have fought my way back. It’s good to get more continuity and rhythm back into my game after a few months where I didn’t play that much.”

Jannik Vestergaard left Borussia Monchengladbach to join Southampton in a €25m deal back in 2018. The 27-year-old expects his experience to help him have the right mindset for his comeback to the national team.

“I’ve accumulated a lot of experience after several years in the Bundesliga and Premier League and have been in the game long enough to know that it’s extremely important to be able to maintain focus on one’s own performance for training and continue to work hard if not playing for a period. I’m sure it’s crucial that I come back and now at least I’m in the starting lineup.”
