Southampton defender Maya Yoshida has emerged as a ‘surprise’ target for Serie A side Sampdoria.

The Italian club are on the hunt for a central defender this month, and earlier we covered a report that they were looking to tie up a deal for Tottenham’s Juan Foyth.

It seems he is not the only Premier League defender in their sights, though, with Sky Sports Italy reporting that Southampton’s Maya Yoshida is a ‘surprise name’ on their list of potential recruits.

The website reports that the Japan international would be a ‘new reinforcement’ for manager Claudio Ranieri.

There is no mention if the move would be a permanent deal or loan, although they would only have until 7pm to get a deal done so a loan deal would likely be easier to wrap up at this point.

Whether Southampton would be open to a deal also isn’t made clear, although Yoshida is not a key member of Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side at present.

He has only managed five minutes of Premier League football since the Saints 9-0 defeat to Leicester in October, and that could play into Sampdoria’s hands.
