Southampton masseur Gianni Fenu has told the Italian media Massimo Cellino tried to bring him to Leeds United. Fenu had previously been at Championship side Huddersfield Town before joining Southampton in 2015.
In an interview with Gianluca Di Marzio, Fenu explained that in his role at Huddersfield Town he got to know the Championship well. The Italian revealed it was during his time at Huddersfield Town that he was introduced to Leeds United owner Cellino. Fenu confirmed the Leeds United chief wanted to hire him, but it was something he had to pass up.
“I breathed the wonderful atmosphere of the Championship and I also got to know Cellino, the president of Leeds United and a Sardinian like me. He wanted me with him, but at the time the conditions weren’t right,” said the Southampton man.
Cellino purchased Leeds United in 2014, and during his time in England he’s brought an Italian influence to the club. Several players have arrived from Serie A and Serie B in his three seasons at the club, and the likes of Nicola Salerno and Benito Carbone were brought in to oversee football matters.
