Southampton are interested in Heerenveen midfielder Joey Veerman and are considering making a move for him ‘in the coming days’.
That’s what De Telegraaf report today, stating that Southampton have been following the midfielder ‘closely’ for months and could be set to make their interest serious.
So far no official bid has arrived from the Saints, but Heerenveen have been informed of their interest after Southampton missed out on Toulouse midfielder Ibrahim Sangaré, who has moved to PSV Eindhoven.
Heerenveen are not opposed to a sale but know they can get a ‘top prize’ from selling the midfielder so therefore want to ensure they do so.
They are protected by Veerman’s contract, with the 21-year-old having signed a new deal lasting until 2024.
No price is mentioned, but Heerenveen will also likely know that Southampton are desperate for a midfielder after Pierre Emerick Hobjberg joined Tottenham, so the power is in the Dutch club’s hands.
Veerman, for his part, is open to making a step up but will only do so if the ‘complete picture’ is right for him, meaning the Saints may have some work to do if they do genuinely want him.
