Southampton defender Wesley Hoedt has seen a planned medical with Lazio today cancelled at the last minute.

That’s according to Lazio News 24, who report on the sudden decision from the Italian side today.

Hoedt has been closing in on a return to his former club over the last week, with Southampton keen to move him on this summer.

The Dutchman has spent the last two seasons out on loan, first spending six months with Celta Vigo and then spending the entirety of last season with Royal Antwerp.

He had looked likely to return to Belgium, but the chance to return to Italy has emerged instead, with Lazio keen to add to their backline and reunite with the player they sold to Southampton three years ago.

Things, though, seem to have hit a snag. Lazio News 24 report that the defender was due for a medical today after the Saints agreed a ‘dry loan’ with a right to buy at the end of it.

Hoedt has also agreed to reduce his wages to make the move happen, and so things appeared to be heading towards a positive conclusion.

However, the medical examinations scheduled at the Paidea clinic today were ‘cancelled at the last moment’ instead.

Why that happened isn’t mentioned, but it appears to have been a sudden decision from Lazio.

Of course, it could all just be nothing, and they’re planning to have it rescheduled at some point in the near future, but this certainly appears to be something to keep an eye on.
