Brought in as Claude Puel’s successor, there was hope Mauricio Pellegrino could address Southampton’s issues in front of goal and entertain the fans more than the Frenchman did last season.
Unfortunately for the Argentinian, the problems have remained, and the Saints find themselves 13th in the Premier League, with their top scorer Manolo Gabbiadini finding the back of the net just three times, which include two goals in one game.
This is why it isn’t surprising to see the club allegedly looking at all possible solutions, including keeping an eye on what goes on in Ligue 2 in France, with Southampton said to be scouting Gazéléc Ajaccio’s Fousseni Diabaté.
The 22-year-old forward is currently playing in his first full season of professional football, scoring three goals in 14 appearances.
While he hasn’t exactly been the most prolific, the left-footed striker has also spent some time playing down the wing for the Corsican side.
Le10 Sport are the ones reporting the alleged interest from Southampton, who are joined by Werder Bremen and Rennes, and while Diabaté might not be the most exciting prospect in world football right now, that doesn’t mean he cannot do a job.
Just look at how the likes of Riyad Mahrez, N’Golo Kanté and Diafra Sakho (when he first arrived at West Ham) adapted to the Premier League.
The Gazéléc striker won’t exactly be expensive, so why not gamble a bit?
After all, he’s scored more goals than Shane Long this season.
