The transfer window is just around the corner, which means any targets need to be finalised, with several back-up alternatives if a manager is keen to strengthen a position. It would be no surprise if Claude Puel added to his Southampton squad after taking over in the summer from Ronald Koeman.
Having now worked with the squad, Puel will be aware of any areas in which he needs to make a quick addition.
Southampton may well be looking to recruit again from Portugal. Under former Benfica manager Ronald Koeman, the club upped their scouting presence in Portugal, looking for good value talent. Koeman was of course well aware of the opportunities on offer for recruitment in Portugal, and helped Southampton go down that path.
In recent weeks, Southampton have attended multiple matches, in what looks to be a spike in their Portuguese interest. On Saturday evening the club had someone watch FC Porto beat Braga 1-0, with Southampton being one of many clubs present. Portuguese newspaper A Bola have included Southampton in the scouting section of their match report.
Linked with Braga’s Rafa Silva repeatedly, Southampton won’t have been watching him last night as he didn’t play. Rui Pedro scored the only goal of the game and was named Man of the Match. The 18 year old striker was making his debut, and did so in style, so will be the subject of much hype.
It wasn’t Southampton’s only match on Saturday in Portugal, with a scout earlier watching Rio Ave beat Tondela 3-1, also reported by A Bola. Fans of the Premier League club are probably best hoping any potential recruit is from the later match.
