L’Equipe have an article in their Tuesday edition on Jean-Victor Makengo. The 18 year old is a central midfielder for Caen which was always going to encourage the comparisons.

Kante played for Caen before moving to Leicester City, and given that Makengo plays in a similar role, and has a lot of potential, the ‘new Kante was inevitable’.

The French newspaper say that Southampton, AS Roma, and Sevilla are all keen on the youngster, but there’s no immediate transfer on the horizon. Claude Puel will of course have a good knowledge of the French market, and Southampton have been seriously scouting in France way before Puel took over at the club.

L’Equipe argue for and against the Kante comparisons, but there seems to be little argument about Makengo’s talent. For now, it’s probably best he stays at Caen and continues his development in French football.

A move to Southampton or anywhere else too soon could stunt Makengo’s progress.
