Southampton are among a host of clubs keeping track of Anderlecht star Sergio Gomez after his impressive performances this season.
That’s according to La Dernière Heure, relayed by Voetbal Nieuws, who say that Southampton are ‘following’ the midfielder turned wing-back.
Gomez joined Anderlecht from Borussia Dortmund in the summer, a move that has turned into a ‘great success’ for all involved.
The Spaniard started his football career in an attacking role, but has been converted to a left wing-back by Vincent Kompany this season to great effect.
It’s a switch that has worked out superbly, with Gomez managing five goals and seven assists in 16 league games so far this season and very likely to add to that tally.
Those performances have ‘undoubtedly’ not gone unnoticed, and while Anderlecht have no intention of letting him go, particularly in the January transfer window, the scouts are circling nonetheless.
LDH report that last weekend alone Ajax, Everton, Manchester United, Villarreal, Stade Rennes, Southampton, Lille OSC, lnter, and AS Monaco all sent a scout to watch the game against Charleroi.
It was not clear who they were there to watch, they hasten to add, but Gomez will ‘undoubtedly have caught their eye’ with two goals in the 3-1 victory.
