On Saturday claims came from Italy that Southampton wouldn’t have it all their own way getting Luciano Vietto from Atletico Madrid.

The rojiblancos are very keen for a permanent sale, so keen it could make one suspicious, but there haven’t been an awful lot of clubs coming froward.

Italian claims brought Sampdoria into the picture, and on Sunday it’s Villarreal thrown in. The Yellow Submarine have just lost Roberto Soldado, and Marca say they’re looking at two players to replace him.

One of those is Arsenal’s Lucas Perez, and the other is Vietto. The Atleti player was formerly at Villarreal, and a return could be the best solution for all involved.

Southampton have been linked with a loan, but Atletico want a permanent deal. This could be one for the Saints to sit out on, given Vietto’s struggles at Atleti and his failure to fully convince when on loan at Sevilla, a move to the Premier League could be too great a gamble.

Villarreal just seems a better fit.
