Back in the summer of 2021, Southampton let Wesley Hoedt leave the club, and the defender then moved to Belgium, where he joined Anderlecht on a free transfer.
Well, it may have taken a couple of years, but the Saints finally managed to benefit from that deal now that the player joined Watford.
Anderlecht sold Hoedt to the Hornets in January for a €2m fee, and according to reports from the Belgian media, a big part of that money went to Southampton.
Voetbal Nieuws today claims that despite letting the player move for free, the Saints negotiated for the percentage of a resale.
That’s why they were ‘entitled to a large part’ of the defender’s move to Watford, and Anderlecht only kept €800k from his transfer.
Hoedt had a quick adaptation to the Hornets, as he already made four starts for the club, and even scored a goal in his debut against Blackburn.
Southampton had a delicate situation when letting him leave in 2021, but with them making some money with that deal now, it doesn’t seem like such a bad deal after all.
