Estudiantes defender Juan Foyth has spent the weekend in the spotlight after being linked to a Tottenham Hotspur move. Even though the 19-year-old has denied knowing anything about the claims, the Argentine press is still pretty confident the transfer is happening.
La Plata newspaper El Dia had an interview with the youngster published on Monday, and besides recalling the amazing period he’s just had, they also asked about his future.
First regarding changing clubs, the player said: “I’d like to be able to play in European football. If there’s some offer that convinces both me and the club, I will go. I hope I can help Estudiantes financially.”
Then he also commented on Tottenham’s interest: “Honestly, when it came up I became aware through social media.”
That’s pretty much a default response for any South American player, but the interesting part is really in what El Dia wrote.
First when introducing the defender, they claim he’s about to join Tottenham. Then they add a short paragraph saying Foyth only had the chance to play for Estudiantes seven times, as if the transfer was done and he’s now off to Spurs.
It’s added that if playing in the Copa Sudamericana match this weekend, he will get to eight appearances for the club ‘before his departure’.
It’s worth recalling that El Dia is the same outlet who broke the news on Saturday, saying that Juan Sebastian Verón would be travelling to London to close the deal. It was claimed the offer was €10m.
They back their information today, and continue stating the Tottenham transfer is close to being done. Given they’ve also spoken to the player, one would assume the newspaper’s sources are pretty good on this one.
