William Carvalho’s wish to leave Sporting CP for a Premier League club was never really a secret, since the local press had been reporting it for months.
So when the Portuguese side and West Ham failed to find an agreement at the end of the transfer window, it was obvious that the player would be frustrated with the situation.
Carvalho is still to speak to the press about what happened, but everyone around him isn’t afraid of talking. Sporting faced Olympiacos in the Champions League last night, and André Martins, who played for the Portuguese club in the past, was now an opponent, and had a chat with his home country’s press.
Martins has known Carvalho for a long time, and it’s interesting to see how, despite saying the midfielder is happy after the West Ham failure, he claims the Sporting captain will find a way out sometime soon. The Olympiacos player couldn’t avoid saying that something will ‘show up’ for the 25-year-old.
“These are players I know, they are great friends, I spoke a bit with William. Football is like this,” Martins told O Jogo.
“William is a player of great quality, I’m happy for Sporting, because they kept a player with much quality and William has been playing well, as we’ve been seeing.
“He’s happy, what he likes to do most is to play football. I’m sure that, with the quality he has, if it wasn’t now, certainly later something will show up and it will be better for him and Sporting.”
So it seems that Carvalho’s wish to leave is intact, and as always, the difficult part is to find an agreement with Sporting. West Ham have truly seen how Sporting can react when annoyed, and that will have also warned other clubs.
