After a long and rather tiresome saga, Sergio Reguilón arrived from Real Madrid at Tottenham in exchange for £27m, giving José Mourinho the left-back he wanted to help his team.
The Spaniard was linked with Manchester United and other clubs, but Daniel Levy gave him and Real Madrid the guarantees they wanted to secure the move.
Since then, the defender has been of great help to the Portuguese and his plans, picking up two assists in his first four Premier League games.
Blocked at Real Madrid by both Marcelo and Ferland Mendy, Reguilón needed the switch either way, as sitting in the stands at Bernabéu was never an option.
Speaking to El Transistor on Onda Cero, relayed by Libertad Digital, he said: “I’m not in Madrid because it’s something that wasn’t up to me. My conscience is very clear. You can’t be frustrated about decisions you don’t get to make. I didn’t get to speak with Zidane”.
The Frenchman clearly didn’t see him of use despite a great campaign with Sevilla last season, but one man’s loss is another’s gain, which Mourinho has benefitted from.
Enjoying himself under the Portuguese, Reguilón had a few words to say about his new manager.
He said: “He is a great person and wins a lot in the short term. He has surprised me in a good way. He has many good things about him”.
That being said, he hasn’t forgotten his childhood club, Real Madrid, adding: “They’ve given me everything and I will always have a very special affection for them”.
