On Tuesday night, a few quick fire claims from various members of the world media suggested that Newcastle United had pulled the trigger for Bruno Guimarães, currently at Lyon.

In fact, Globo Esporte in Brazil went as far as saying the bid was accepted by the Ligue 1 side, who are now actively denying this through their local newspaper, Le Progrès.

The outlet have an article on the matter on Wednesday morning, summarising the reports from the previous evening before adding a quote from the club: “We deny an agreement with Newcastle.”

What they don’t do, however, is deny the bid itself, which Le Progrès catch on, saying ‘the offer of €40m, which is a more than substantial sum in this terrible period of financial crisis, is something to think about’.

They then have another quote, this time from a ‘well-placed interlocutor’, who explains: “Newcastle have suddenly become very rich, and their name is all over the market.”

While it’s pointed out that Bruno Guimarães is ‘also followed by Juventus, Arsenal, Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain’, they also ask ‘how did this offer, we repeat ‘enormous compared to the level of the current market, come about?’

At this point, it’s obvious ‘the bidding is rising, but as for saying that Bruno Guimarães is already in the north of England, there’s a lot of room’, suggesting it’s not quote that close.
