Argentina are in Group C for the upcoming Qatar World Cup, a group they’re sharing with Mexico, Poland and Saudi Arabia.
When the group was announced, Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was seen to shout “Easy, easy, easy” in English, which obviously didn’t go down very well in Mexico. Argentina may be favourites for the group, but there’s also big expectation for the Mexican side.
The Aston Villa keeper’s international colleague Cristian Romero has now found himself in a similar situation, although the Tottenham player insists he’s been misquoted.
Last week the defender granted an interview to the media and was reported as saying something along the lines of: “It is a complicated rival, I think they have never played a World Cup.”
That always looked like either a misquote or mis-speak from the Tottenham player, yet it inevitably caused a stir in Mexico, probably partly down to Martinez’s earlier comment.
Romero has now come out and angrily insisted he’s been misrepresented and that he would never disrespect a rival in such a way.
Argentine newspaper Ole quote the Spurs man as saying: “Something I never said was created by some journalists who overwrite. I would never disrespect Mexico, they said that I had said that they had never played in a World Cup. If you see the note clearly it is not like that. Those people who like to talk more and create controversy, tell them to look a little at the things they put because there are people in Mexico who believe that I disrespected them and I would never do it to a team or, much less, a country.”
Mexico face Argentina on November 26th in a Qatar, and both countries will be hoping to progress from the group.
