Sunderland were close to landing Sassuolo’s Armand Lauriente last week but the transfer fell through at the final hurdle.

The two clubs had agreed a fee of €20m and everything was going in the right direction, the Black Cats pulled the plug on the deal, with a message being sent out that it wasn’t related to a medical.

SassuoloNews now report on what really happened yesterday, according to their information.

According to the report, Lauriente had undergone a medical with Sunderland and had also boarded a flight to Portugal to join his new teammates for pre-season training.

Upon landing though, ‘something changed’ between the Frenchman’s agents and Sunderland. There were disagreements over personal terms, even if the winger was initially close to signing a five-year deal worth €2.5m per season.

This angered Sassuolo, who have now given up hope of fixing the rift between the player’s entourage and Sunderland.

Lauriente has been hoping to leave the Italian side for two years and asked for a transfer last year. Now that the opportunity arrived, it has fallen through at the last minute.
