Over the weekend, reports from Brazil revealed that Flamengo paid the wrong João Gomes for the transfer to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Rio de Janeiro club were supposed to pay the midfielder for his share of the move to Wolves, and ended up remunerating someone else called João Gomes.

It turns out this person was a former basketball player at Flamengo, who reveals he got scared when he saw €340k coming into his bank account.

Outlet Globo Esporte managed to speak to him, who told the whole story about how he found out about the money.

“I hadn’t even seen it, I was travelling with my godmother. It was when I arrived at her house that my mother sent a message asking about some money that Flamengo sent,” basketball player João Gomes told Globo Esporte.

“I was scared and even afraid because until then I didn’t know where the money came from.”

“I thought someone had misplaced the deposit or something. My godfather also said that I had to be careful because someone could be using my account to launder money.”

“That’s when they sent the letter from Justice justifying the error. We are solving everything as soon as possible.”

Midfielder João Gomes joined Wolves on a €18.7m deal from Flamengo in January, and the money he was due was because he had a percentage from his economic rights.

The 22-year-old is still adapting to English football, as he has only had a total of 66 minutes in three appearances so far.

With the money problem solved, João Gomes can now probably rest assured about receiving that payment and get back to focusing on his work at Wolves.

The basketball player, meanwhile, will probably dream of what he could have done with that amount for a few days.
