Scott McTominay hadn’t started for Napoli since joining from Manchester United until the weekend.

And his first start for the club came in one of Napoli’s most important games of the season, as the Scotsman featured against Juventus.

Instead of shoehorning the ex-United man into midfield, Antonio Conte used him in the final third. The performance was impressive and there has been a lot of praise for the Scotland star in recent days.

Journalist Paolo Condo has now said that McTominay could actually turn out to be the best signing of the year in Serie A.

In his column for La Repubblica, as relayed by CalcioNapoli24, Condo wrote:

“Antonio Conte has put another week of work into Napoli, feeling so sure of the change of formation [that he felt] necessary to insert McTominay , who for reputation and impact could turn out to be the signing of the year.”

McTominay played in the final third largely because of Conte’s decision to change his side’s formation to a 3-5-2 and he was the only new addition to the side.

That is clearly indicative of the fact that the Italian has a lot of trust in the player. More than that, he knows where the strengths of the signing from Manchester United lie and he is focusing on those.
