PSV have an ambitious transfer plan to try and sign Pau Lopez, report De Telegraaf. The young goalkeeper has been impressing with Espanyol so far this season, and still hasn’t signed a contract despite his current one ending in June.

Tottenham had wanted to sign the player on a permanent basis, after his loan there last year. Mauricio Pochettino and other Tottenham coaches were impressed with Pau, however, Spurs were looking for a bargain deal and Espanyol decided against it.

Pau had been lined up as a long term replacement for Hugo Lloris at Tottenham, but getting first team football at Espanyol isn’t such as bad alternative to sitting on the bench, or in the stands, at Spurs.

PSV are looking for a replacement for Jeroen Zoet, who was heavily linked with a move during the summer window. Newcastle United were said to be interested back then, as they looked to improve their goalkeeper options.

That surely remains a consideration for Rafael Benitez at St James’ Park, and De Telegraaf mention Newcastle United again, although it’s mainly referring to the last summer window.

The Dutch newspaper says it’s ‘no surprise’ that PSV are looking for a new goalkeeper, given the Zoet situation, and an exit is expected. That would give Newcastle a real chance of signing the player.

A few weeks ago, Sport Witness suggested Pau Lopez is a goalkeeper Newcastle United should look at themselves, but since then the goalkeeper has suggested he’s not keen on a quick return to England. Those comments could have been designed to impress Espanyol fans, so it’s probably still worth consideration for Benitez and Newcastle.
