Since his transfer from PSV Eindhoven to Manchester United, the English media have been fascinated by Memphis Depay.
Not because he has bamboozled countless opponents on the pitch, but because has the audacity to have a life off it.
Yes, admittedly, his fascination with expensive cars and hats might not sit well with fans when his form on the pitch doesn’t back up the salary he’s on, but it’s not like he isn’t trying.
It’s just not working for him.
This includes famous Dutch pundit Johan Derksen, who was interviewed by Sport/Foot magazine in Belgium about all things Netherlands, including the Manchester United winger.
He said: “I’m very disappointed, like Louis Van Gaal, who did everything to get him. He was the biggest talent in the country, but what has he shown in England? Expensive cars, coats and hats. He believed in his own fame.
“Here in the Netherlands, we believe we’re heroes as soon as we kick a ball and go past a left-back. He underestimated English professionalism.”
While many footballers have managed to transition from the Eredivisie to the Premier League rather seamlessly, Depay doesn’t appear to be one of them.
The Manchester United star, if you want to still call him that, has barely played under José Mourinho this season, with the Portuguese manager apparently having little faith in the player.
Rumours of a move away in January to help kickstart his career again have started doing the rounds, and if things don’t get any better soon, Depay might well leave Manchester United in the near future.
With a lot of potential clearly left, however, it wouldn’t be surprising if the club make a large chunk of their money back if they do sell him.
