Sunday afternoon saw De Telegraaf report Joost van Aken is joining Sheffield Wednesday.
Heerenveen and Sheffield Wednesday plan to reach an agreement for the player’s transfer, according to the Dutch newspaper, and he was therefore kept out of today’s match against ADO.
Van Aken watched the match in the stands so as not to risk injury, with negotiations between the two clubs speeding ahead. De Telegraaf say Van Aken will get a ‘multi-year’ contract at Sheffield Wednesday.
A little digging in the Netherlands shows it was Heerenveen fan website FeanOnline who had the scoop, and they state that instead of signing for Lazio, who he was rumoured to be close to, Van Aken is off to join The Owls.
FeanOnline say the negotiations have been around the €5m mark, although they couldn’t guarantee things would be successful.
It’s pointed out that former Heerenveen player Gerard Sibon was something of a hero at Sheffield Wednesday.
The 23 year old’s defender’s exit from Heerenveen isn’t unexpected, but perhaps the destination has been a surprise.
