It’s not very common to have English clubs watching games from the Portuguese League which do not feature Benfica, Sporting, Porto or Braga. And it’s even more unusual when the scouts are not from Premier League sides.
But Sheffield Wednesday are really an exception. Since the arrival of the manager Carlos Carvalhal, the club have been keeping an eye on many Portuguese games.
That’s why they were present at the match between Estoril and Belenenses at the weekend, according to A Bola’s information.
What the Owls officials saw was quite a strange match. Belenenses played much better, opened the scoring, but ended up missing a penalty and hitting the post a few minutes later.
At the end of the match, their goalkeeper (who is Manchester United loanee Joel Pereira) made a mistake and they conceded a goal to draw the game.
The man of the match was Belenenses winger Fabio Sturgeon, who was responsible for creating most of the team’s chances. His teammate Abel Camará and Estoril’s Konstantin Bazelyuk also came out of it well after scoring goals.
Sheffield Wednesday currently have four Portuguese players in the squad, but given the many rumours and scouting trips, we wouldn’t be surprised to see a few more coming in the next couple of windows, should Carvalhal remain in charge.
