Frederico Venâncio’s transfer to Sheffield Wednesday is all over the Portuguese media today.

The local newspapers all reported the player’s departure from Vitória de Setúbal on a one-year loan deal with the Championship side.

But the amount which Sheffield Wednesday would have to pay to get him permanently hadn’t been announced, at least until today.

That’s when club president Fernando Oliveira was present at a club event and confirmed: Sheffield Wednesday can sign the player for €3m, which according to Record would be a transfer record for the Portuguese side.

Frederico Venancio’s contract with Vitória de Setúbal was supposed to expire at the end of the season, which means he would be able to sign a pre-agreement after January.

But Vitória convinced him to sign a new contract, which runs until 2021, before loaning him to Sheffield Wednesday. The result is that instead of losing the player for nothing, he could leave for a club record.
