Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gündogan has heaped praised on Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel ahead of their meeting in the Champions League.
The German has been speaking to SportBILD ahead of the clash between the two sides in the Champions League quarter-finals next week.
Manchester City host Bayern in the first-leg of that clash on Tuesday, looking to secure a famous victory to hopefully progress to the semi-finals of the competition.
They will come up against a new look Bayern sided headed up by Tuchel, who arrived at the end of March following the sacking of Julian Nagelsmann and previously beat Pep Guardiola’s side in the Champions League final with Chelsea.
The German coach is someone that Gündogan knows well, having worked alongside him at Borussia Dortmund, featuring in 40 games under his leadership with a tally of three goals and seven assists in total.
That was very much a short association between the pair, but the Manchester City man admits it had a profound impact on him nonetheless.
“The training under him was of an enormously high quality and intensity,” he said.
“He is a very tail-loving person and, for example, interrupts many sequences to explain exactly what he wants to see and also what worked well.
“As a player, that has brought me a very big step forward and shaped me significantly. And that, even though it was ultimately only one season together.
“He is someone who openly expresses his opinion, but I think that speaks more for him than against him.”
