Mali coach Tom Saintfiet has elected to throw shade at Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany following his move from Burnley this summer.
Voetbal Primeur cover comments from the new Mali coach today, in which he takes a swipe at the Belgian manager.
Kompany made the surprise move to Bavaria this summer as Bayern searched out the long-term replacement for Thomas Tuchel.
The German side went through a long list of options before settling on Kompany, who jumped at the opportunity to move to the German record champions.
The move certainly raised eyebrows and questions given Kompany’s experience as a manager to date, which is so far comprised of 90 games at Anderlecht, 96 games at Burnley and three games at Bayern.
His previous career as a player clearly stood in his favour, particularly his time at Manchester City, where he established himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League and won four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, thee EFL Cups and two Community Shields.
Saintfiet certainly thinks that was the case, throwing shade at the former Burnley boss today when discussing his own managerial career.
“I’m just an ambitious trainer who tries to find his way to the top in an atypical way,” he told Het Nieuwsblad, relayed by Voetbal Primeur.
“Some coaches can rely on their name and end up at Bayern Munich via Anderlecht or Burnley. I can’t do that. I always have to think carefully about the next step in my career.
“I am on the bench as national coach for the 105th time. So, I definitely want to break that record. Wouldn’t be bad for an unknown trainer who never got a chance in his own country, right?”
