Mikael Lustig spent Monday evening in a Stockholm nightclub, helping AIK players celebrate their recent triumph.
He’d been staying in the city and sent a congratulations message to Sebastian Larsson, who then told the Celtic player to come and join him.
Speaking about it earlier this week to the Swedish media, and discussing the inevitable AIK transfer rumours it created, Lustig said he’s contracted to Celtic and will be there next year too.
With a contract expiring in June 2019, some took the comments to signal a coming extension, but in Sweden they believe AIK interest is genuine.
Fotboll Direkt say they’ve been told by ‘several sources’ that AIK want to sign the Celtic defender on a free transfer when his contract with the Scottish Premiership club ends.
The club’s general manager, Björn Wesström, was happy to speak but remained cagey, saying: “I just have to stress very strongly that this is a player who has an agreement with a year left and to contact him now, we must have Celtic’s blessing, and we have not asked for that.
“We have the highest respect for Celtic and agreements which have been entered into. No, I do not want to comment on this anymore – no more than he’s an unbelievable player and a regular national team player and has been for so long.”
Wesström didn’t want to deny interest or even talk it down, but was clearly worried about upsetting Celtic.
