Since Manchester United (or should we say José Mourinho?) refuse to let Matteo Darmian leave Old Trafford this summer, Napoli are being forced to look elsewhere to bolster their team at right-back.
Among the many names thrown out by Il Mattino happens to be Tottenham’s Serge Aurier, who only arrived last summer from Paris Saint-Germain.
The Ivory Coast international didn’t have the best of first seasons at Spurs, which isn’t to say he was a failure, but he will have been targeting the upcoming season as a great chance to prove to everyone he can be strong competition for Kieran Trippier.
Despite Napoli being interested, there’s no guarantee a move will be made by Aurelio de Laurentiis’ side, as Il Mattino explain the Serie A side only have one non-EU slot left, and it could become an issue.
The Italians are also looking at Guillermo Ochoa, who would also require said space in squad, meaning it’s a case of one or the other.
With Alex Meret (even if he is currently injured) and Orestis Karnezis already at the club, the need for the Mexico international isn’t exactly huge, but, then again, they also already have Elseid Hysaj at right-back.
Either signing would be a luxury, and Il Mattino make it clear that, for now, all Napoli are doing is ‘thinking about Aurier’.
Nothing concrete as of yet.
