On Thursday afternoon, one of the bombshells of the transfer window was dropped when AC Milan announced in a hastily prepared press conference that Gianluigi Donnarumma would not be renewing his contract, which currently runs until June 2018.
This meant one of two things would happen this summer: he’d either be sold or he’d stay and leave on a free next summer.
While that gets worked out, the news also sent the Italian media into a mini-frenzy as they seem to think the news will likely have a domino effect on the goalkeeper market this year, which could include Inter eventually needing to replace Samir Handanovic. And that’s where Tottenham Hotspur come in.
Il Mattino on Friday, a Naples based newspaper, claim that, fearing they might lose the Slovenian goalkeeper this summer, the Serie A side have enquired about the availability of a few goalkeepers around Europe, including Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris.
If true, this a rather bold move by Inter, thinking they can try and lure a player who is preparing a season in the Champions League in a Spurs team very likely to be challenging for the Premier League title once again next year.
Also, we highly doubt that Mauricio Pochettino and Daniel Levy would let their captain leave considering the 30-year-old renewed his contract with Tottenham until 2022 just over six months ago.
It was worth a try, though.
