Spanish coach Marcelino has turned down the opportunity to take over at Wolverhampton Wanderers, as he is waiting for the Spain job to become available.
That’s according to journalist Pedro Morata, who says Jorge Mendes offered the Spanish coach the position at Molineux.
Wolves remain on the hunt for a replacement for Bruno Lage, who was sacked earlier this month following a disappointing start to the season.
They had hoped to hire Julen Lopetegui after he was sacked by Sevilla but he elected to turn down the offer due to a desire to stay in Spain with his family for the time being.
That’s left Wolves desperately scrambling to try and find an alternative, with a growing list of names being linked with the job but nobody seemingly close to taking over.
It seems Marcelino, who has managed clubs such as Sevilla, Villarreal, Valencia and Athletic Bilbao in Spain, is the latest to be added to that list, but he has already said no to the proposal.
“As far as I have absolutely confirmed Marcelino has turned down the possibility of coaching Brighton and Nottingham Forest (and Wolves)” he told Directo Gol.
“I think Marcelino is waiting in case Luis Enrique does not continue in the Spanish national team as coach of Spain. He wants to be Spain coach.
“Marcelino is certainly one of those who is sure to be on the shortlist of the Royal Spanish Federation.”
