As things stand, Ander Herrera will not be a Manchester United player next season as his current contract runs out in June and he has yet to sign an extension.
In an interview with ABC in Spain, the midfielder was fairly candid when it came to answering questions as he revealed talks weren’t particularly going well either.
He also talked about was the last three years at Old Trafford, most of which were spent under José Mourinho, and his answers were as professional as they could be.
He said: “The first two seasons weren’t brilliant but very positive. In fact, I’d classify the first as successful: we won three titles, and the second, even if we didn’t win anything, I don’t think we had a bad season. We were league runners up and in the cup.
“It’s true that the third season, the one where we were meant to take off, wasn’t like that. We started badly and we dragged that bad start until the arrival of Solskjaer, but I won’t be the one to say a bad word about Mourinho.”
The Spaniard then went onto explaining that he had ‘great respect’ for and a ‘great relationship’ with the Portuguese manager, who made him a better player, and will ‘always be grateful’ towards him.
As he put it: “You need to respect those who gave their all for the club, and Mourinho did that. The ending wasn’t what we wanted, but it isn’t the bravest to speak badly of a manager who isn’t there anymore. If you need to do it, say it to his face.”
Since joining Manchester United from Athletic Bilbao in 2014, Ander Herrera has made 187 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring 20 goals and assisting teammates 27 times.
While not a regular this season, he has still managed to appear 26 times, scoring three and assisting another three.
