It’s amazing what difference a game can make. After weeks of the Spanish media reporting Kevin Gameiro was being edged towards the exit at Atletico Madrid, the player has now had an opportunity to insist he wants to stay.

Gameiro’s poor performance against Qarabag last week was thought to be the final straw, with Diego Simeone not being a huge fan of the Frenchman despite signing him. With Diego Costa available from the winter window onwards, Gameiro is seen as surplus to requirements, with Everton the club most often linked.

Everton are said to be ‘very interested’ in the striker ahead of the winter window, and if that interest comes from Steve Walsh then Ronald Koeman’s exit probably isn’t important.

Gameiro hasn’t taken the hint from Atletico, and after scoring against Celta Vigo at the weekend said the club need to spell it out if they want him gone: “If they do not want me they have to say it clearly.”

There’s time, Kevin. And if Atletico do spit it put, rather than leaking to the Spanish media, and do so before Gameiro proves he should stay, then Everton’s chances improve.
