Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund will not be ‘satisfied’ with Newcastle United and want to take on more ‘prestigious’ clubs if they can.

That’s according to former Inter Milan general manager Ernesto Paolillo, who believes the Saudi group have not finished buying clubs in football just yet.

PIF took charge at Newcastle earlier this year after a protracted effort to get themselves into the football world.

Their introduction to life in football ownership has hardly been a smooth one, with Newcastle proving to be a far tougher ship to turn around than they had likely imagined.

While their focus remains on St James’ Park, for the time being, there have been numerous reports that Newcastle is just the start for them in terms of investment.

Talks have already reportedly taken place about investment in Inter Milan, whose owners Suning may be forced to sell as the financial strains following the global pandemic continue to hit.

At the moment, that appears to be more of an idea for PIF than a firm strategy, but Paolillo thinks that will change sooner rather than later.

“They care relatively little about sanctions,” FC Inter News report him saying.

“I don’t think Saudi Arabia will be satisfied with Newcastle. They will soon be aiming at clubs of greater prestige.

“For the sake of competitiveness, limits must be placed on sports spending. We must put a stop to excessive capital increases.

“And for those who get out of line, by certifying fictitious revenues or inventing imaginative sponsorships, penalties are also needed on a sporting level.”
